Jayme’s Story
For Jayme Marooney, resilience, love and presence were not just ideals to aspire toward; they were how he lived.
As the second oldest in a line of four brothers growing up in central New Jersey, resilience was a necessary skill learned early. His was a home that led with love and understood well the currency of a perfectly timed joke. Yet, Jayme’s sense of presence, as well as his disarming warmth, was a gift that could make even strangers feel like “Jaymo” was there for them. These essential qualities helped Jayme thrive in the roles he came to love most: husband to his wife Daniella, and father to his sons, Maxwell and James.
It then came as no surprise when, during the darkest and most grueling hours in his battle against cancer, Jayme turned his heart and mind toward a future he’d never see, and people he would never meet.
In 2020, one month after he and Daniella welcomed Maxwell into the world, Jayme, then only 30 years old, was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Doctors quickly removed the malignant tumor, and Jayme, with family and friends by his side, began the long and trying road of immunotherapy. However, the cancer later spread to his lungs and brain. The worsening illness and intensifying treatments consumed more of Jayme’s life, leaving Daniella to not only watch after her husband, but to continue working while taking care of their young boys.
Yet, amidst the toughest battle of their lives, and the physical, emotional, and financial toll of his cancer and treatments, Jayme and Daniella instinctually began thinking about others, and how impossible a journey cancer can be for young families of lesser means. Starting an organization focused on those families who every day endure what he endured, was one of Jayme’s final wishes. After he passed away in 2023, Jayme’s family and friends established the Jaymo Foundation in his name to fulfill the wish of alleviating some of the cancer struggle by helping young families as they navigate a seemingly impossible burden.
Through the Jaymo Foundation, Jayme Marooney’s resilience, love, and presence lives on, and young families grappling with cancer can feel what countless people felt during Jayme’s lifetime: that Jaymo is there for them.
